Piñatas to the Playful
(a backyard project turned almost serious)
philosophy:
Strangely enough, the piñata-making process is a cathartic practice of detachment. I once watched a group of Buddhist monks spend countless hours and days creating an intricate sand painting. No glue, no fuss. At the end of the project, they gracefully swept it into a pile, and watched the wind blow it into the river. It was a beautiful lesson in patient dedication, as well as disinterested design.
In a similar fashion, I find that hand-crafting piñatas provides the artist with a mission- imagination is worthy of admiration, yet the finished product has a limited expiration date.
